Children's Supplements on Holiday and Away From Home

Children's Supplements on Holiday and Away From Home

The short answer: pack the bottle, the measuring syringe and a note of the dose, keep the timing tied to the same part of the day wherever you are, and make sure only one adult is responsible for giving it. Once a liquid like ours is opened it needs to stay cool, so plan for a fridge where you're staying. If a few days get missed while you're away, carry on as normal when you get back.

On holiday

  • Keep it cool. Our liquid should be refrigerated once opened and used within 3 months. Use a cool bag with an ice pack for the journey and put it in the fridge when you arrive. An unopened bottle only needs a cool, dark place.
  • Flying. The bottle holds 150ml. Rules on liquids in hand luggage differ between airports and change from time to time, so check with your airport before you travel, or pack it in your hold bag.
  • Time zones. Keep the dose tied to the same part of the day, such as breakfast or the bedtime drink, in local time. A few hours either way makes no difference.
  • Different drinks. If your child's usual juice or milk isn't available, water is fine. Avoid hot drinks.
  • Taking a break. Some families pause supplements for a short holiday. That's fine, as long as you restart at the normal dose when you're home and don't give extra to make up.

At grandparents' or with a childminder

  • Write down the dose, the time and how you give it, for example "5ml in the bedtime milk".
  • Send the syringe or measure along with the bottle.
  • Agree who gives it on which days, so it isn't missed or given twice.
  • If your child is only there for the day, it's usually easiest to keep the dose at home, at breakfast or bedtime.

Nursery and school

Most nurseries, childminders and schools have a policy and a consent form for anything given to children during the day. For a once-a-day supplement, the simplest option is to give it at home in the morning or evening, so nobody else needs to be involved.

Between two homes

Children who split their week between two homes can easily miss a dose, or get two. These steps help:

  1. Agree the routine together. Use the same dose at the same part of the day in both homes.
  2. Decide where the bottle lives. Either one bottle travels with your child in a cool bag, or each home keeps its own bottle in the fridge. With two bottles nothing has to travel, as long as each is used within 3 months of opening.
  3. Keep a shared record. A shared note on your phones, or a tick chart that travels in their bag, answers the "did they have it?" question at handover.
  4. Decide in advance who gives it on handover days. These are the days a dose is most likely to be missed or doubled.

Getting back to normal

If the routine slipped while you were away, pick it up again at the usual time on your first normal day back. There's no need to make up missed doses. See what to do about a missed dose and how to make a daily supplement routine stick.
