Magnesium for teenagers: how much they need and why it dips

Magnesium for Teenagers: How Much They Need and Why It Dips

The short answer: teenagers need about 280mg of magnesium a day at 11 to 14 and 300mg at 15 to 18, more than at any other point in childhood. UK surveys have repeatedly found that many teenagers, especially girls, fall short. Breakfast, wholegrains, beans, nuts, seeds and milk close most of the gap; a supplement can top up the rest.

That is more than double what a five-year-old needs, at a time when eating habits often get less predictable.

Why intake dips in the teenage years

  • Skipped breakfasts. Cereals, oats and wholemeal toast are some of the easiest magnesium sources.
  • More snacks and convenience food, which tend to be refined and lower in minerals.
  • Dieting and cutting food groups, which is common, particularly among teenage girls.
  • Busy schedules: sport, clubs, part-time jobs and late nights.
  • Energy drinks and caffeine replacing meals and disrupting sleep.

Why it matters

Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, normal muscle function, normal psychological function and the maintenance of normal bones. The teenage years are when most bone mass is built, and when tiredness, revision and sport all pile up.

Easy wins for teens

  1. A grab-and-go breakfast: overnight oats, a wholegrain cereal bar with a banana, or peanut butter on wholemeal toast.
  2. Better snacks: a handful of nuts or seeds, hummus with wholemeal pitta, dark chocolate instead of sweets.
  3. Beans and wholegrains at tea time: chilli, burritos, wholewheat pasta, brown rice.
  4. Milk or yoghurt daily.
  5. Swap energy drinks for water and proper meals, and keep caffeine away from the evening.

Should teens take a supplement?

If diet is patchy, a top-up is reasonable. Choose a gentle form like magnesium glycinate, follow the label for their age, and keep supplemental magnesium within official limits (250mg a day in European guidance). Check with a GP if your teen has a medical condition or takes medication. Our magnesium for kids is dosed at 5ml (70mg) a day for ages 5 to 14; older teens should follow the label of a product made for their age.

Sleep is the other half

Teenagers' body clocks shift later, which collides with early school starts. Screens off an hour before bed, morning daylight and a consistent wake-up time help. See how much sleep children need.
